Delray Beach police are searching for the person responsible for shooting a man early Thursday morning in the middle of a busy roadway.
Police said they received an anonymous call of gunshots in the area near Military Trail and Atlantic Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man who had been shot twice near his car.
Investigators said the victim’s car was bumped from behind. They said the man and his passenger got out of the car and were approached by two other men in a sport utility vehicle, possibly a Jeep.
It’s unclear if the man was shot in or near the car. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but his condition wasn’t immediately disclosed.
Delray Beach police said they believe the shooting could be connected to a shooting in West Palm Beach about 30 minutes later.
In that shooting, a man was robbed by someone in a similar vehicle near Palmetto Street and South Olive Avenue.
A series of violent armed robberies and carjackings throughout Palm Beach County have multiple law enforcement agencies working together.
“The purpose of what these people are to district you so they can commit another crime,” said Delray Beach police Sgt. Nicole Guerriero.
Authorities said most of the robberies are happening between midnight and 6 a.m. The criminals are bumping the back of cars, causing a minor accident, and then holding up the drivers at gunpoint, taking their cash and wallets.
“Your life is at stake. It’s not worth it,” said Kellie Griffith, an automatic teller machine user. “Now knowing that this is happening, you’re better off staying in your car.”
