County to create institute, theater to honor Burt Reynolds

The Board of County Commissioners, at their June 21 meeting, authorized staff to negotiate a lease of 0.7 acres of county property in Burt Reynolds Park for the Burt Reynolds Institute for Film and Theater (BRIFT). The plan is to construct a 5,000-square-foot institute and museum facility.

The building would include a 99-seat black-box theatre for teaching and museum space to display Reynolds’ memorabilia.

In other action at that meeting, commissioners:

PBIA – approved a noise monitoring station for reading of airport noise levels in the vicinity of the Town of Cloud Lake south of PBIA between I-95 and Australian Avenue.

Housing & Community Development – approved community development block grant funding for construction of a building addition to the Norman Wimbley Gymnasium in Lake Worth. The addition will be used for art, dance, exercise classes and summer youth camp activities.

Fire Rescue – approved an extension of the agreement with Florida Medical Training Institute, Inc. to provide clinical field experience to paramedic and EMT students.  The students will respond with county paramedics to observe and assist in delivering emergency medical care in actual emergencies.

Wage theft ordinance – postponed the public hearing regarding an ordinance to establish a procedure for wage theft until March 2012.

Glades Correctional Institute (GCI) – adopted a resolution urging the legislature of the state of Florida, the governor and the Florida Department of Corrections to continue operating the GCI in Belle Glade.

Glades Utility Authority – approved funds for emergency repairs to the Lake Region Water Treatment Plant’s wells.

Inspector General funding – discussion with the Palm Beach County League of Cities, regarding FY 2012 budget. Staff was directed to look into the original 0.25 percent funding process on contracts to fund the Office of Inspector General.
