WEST DELRAY BEACH – A Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office helicopter made a hard landing in a community west of the city Friday afternoon.

Both the pilot and co-pilot were taken to Delray Medical Center with minor injuries, Sheriff’s officials said.

Witnesses told Sheriff’s officials that the Bell 407 aircraft  was flying south along US 441 shortly before 3 p.m. when it took a hard left turn, then right and lost altitude. The helicopter then suddenly dropped in the 9500 block of Isles Cay Drive near West Atlantic Avenue, officials said.

The crash narrowly missed a convenience store where farm workers had congregated after leaving work.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
