Hurricane Sandy’s current forecast path is keeping tropical storm force winds off shore but it has forced the closure of Palm Beach County Schools and cancellation of flights from the two area airports.
Palm Beach County schools will have a short day Thursday and closed on Friday, Oct. 26.
All Palm Beach County Boys & Girls Clubs will be closed after school on Thursday and all day on Friday. For information, parents may call 561-683-3287.
Palm Beach International Airport is reporting one flight cancellation to Marsh Harbor on Abaco Island in the Bahamas.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has canceled flights to Kingston, Jamaica, and Freeport, Nassau, Georgetown and Eleuthera in the Bahamas.
Airport officials are monitoring Hurricane Sandy’s progress and are anticipating 38 mile per hour winds beginning today through Friday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center and Broward County Emergency Management.
All Palm Beach County government offices will remain open today and Friday.
Palm Beach County Assistant County Administrator Vince Bonvento said officials from the National Hurricane Center, along with officials from Broward and Miami-Dade counties, said gusts will be only about 30-35 mph with about 1-3 inches of rain expected.
PalmTran buses and other services are expected to remain open. The Head Start program for children will operate on a regular schedule Thursday and be closed for children Friday. Employees will report to centers as usual, however, for work, officials said.
