School District Considers GPS for Buses

 By CRA News Service

Parents in Palm Beach County may soon be able to track their child’s school bus online.

The school board on Wednesday approved a plan to install GPS systems on 550 of the district’s 800 buses. The contract will cost no more than $500,000.

“The GPS will allow us to track the location and speed of the buses,” said Joseph Sanches, chief of Support Operations. “It will also let us know if the flashing lights were activated, the stop arms were deployed and the door opened. We can also tell if the buses have been idling for too long; this will save us gas.”

The feature will allow parents to go online via computer, tablet or smartphone to see where their child’s bus is located. This is a password protected application and parents will only be able to see their child’s bus. The School District will also be piloting a student tracking system which will allow school officials to know which students get off and on the buses.
