Local Civic Groups Represented in Rose Bowl Parade

(Jan. 1) Waking up on New Year’s Day, turning on the TV and watching the Rose Parade is a tradition for millions of Americans. But this year, in particular, members of two local organizations were among those glued to the screen, as their groups were represented.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., launched its centennial year with a
float in the parade This was the first time that a black Greek-letter organization participated in the 124 year history of the parade in Pasadena, Calif. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has at least two alumnae chapters in the local area.

Rotary International also had a float, which was themed “Peace Through Service” and featured a spinning globe, turning gears, lotus and cherry blossoms and a giant origami “peace crane.” The float symbolized the service projects done by the more than 1.2 million Rotarians in clubs in 210 countries. Rotary has several clubs in the local area, including two in Delray Beach.
