Suspicious Powder Locks Down County Jail

By Tamiyha Thompson

A powdered substance that fell out of an inmate’s property forced the temporary lockdown of the second floor of the Palm Beach County Jail Tuesday morning, officials said.

PBC Fire-Rescue was called to the scene at 3228 Gun Club Road, west of West Palm Beach around 8:45 a.m. to determine what the white powdered substance was.

A member of the inmate property unit, Corrections Support Personnel was pulling an inmate’s property at the jail, when a powdered substance seeped out, officials said.

No one was exposed to the substance, which tested to be a non-protein ‘silica’ based substance and not a threat, Sheriff’s Office officials said. The lockdown was lifted.
