Getting Them Ready for School

By Chris Pierre Louis

DELRAY BEACH – Palm Beach County Mayor Steven Abrams assists LaKyra Duritsa, 5, with her shoes at the annual Back to School Bash on Saturday at Village Academy. LaKyra, a student at Rolling Green Elementary in Boynton Beach, was among several hundred students who received free school supplies at the event hosted by the Spirit of Giving, a collaboration of more than 50 nonprofit organizations. Sponsors include the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office, Boca Raton Regional Hospital and a list of other local organizations, companies and people.

Each child had the opportunity to select grade-appropriate items including backpacks, pens, notebooks, and other needed supplies in the styles she or he preferred.

In a classroom, about a dozen barbers provided free haircuts for the boys.

There were food stations across the campus and several dozen resource agencies to help families.

The gym was converted into a shopping store. Each child was paired with a personal shopper who guided him or her through the “store” of new school supplies.
